Figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau's Statistics of U.S. Businesses (SUSB) dataset — the same source used throughout USBizIndex. "Firms" and "employment" reflect employer businesses only (sole proprietors with no paid staff are not included in this specific dataset, so real market size in owner-operator-heavy verticals may run higher than shown).
Some vertical/state combinations aren't published at this level of detail by Census and won't return a result — this tool never fills a gap with an estimate presented as fact.
