Data Sourcing Methodology

How USBizIndex collects, validates, and structures business data — and what buyers should expect about coverage and freshness.

Where the Data Comes From

Every business record in the USBizIndex directory and data products is compiled from publicly available sources. We do not purchase data from data brokers, collect non-public information, or scrape private systems.

Google Business Listings

The primary data source for business name, address, phone, website, rating, review count, hours, and coordinates. Accessed via DataForSEO's business listings API, which aggregates publicly visible Google Business Profile data.

State Licensing Databases

For licensed trades (plumbers, electricians, contractors, HVAC, and others), state licensing board records provide a verified baseline of licensed operators. Texas plumbers are cross-referenced against the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) registry.

U.S. Census Bureau — Statistics of U.S. Businesses (SUSB)

Annual employer firm counts, employee totals, payroll, and revenue figures by state and NAICS code. Used to provide official market size context on every vertical landing page. Source: Census SUSB 2022 data.

Bureau of Labor Statistics — OES

Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for employment counts, median wages, and wage distribution by occupation and state. Used for workforce market intelligence on vertical pages.

Texas Workforce Commission

State-level employment projections for Texas occupations. Used to provide forward-looking growth context.

Website coverage varies by vertical and market maturity. Trades in larger metros typically have higher website coverage than rural or micro-business markets. Phone number coverage is consistently above 95% across all verticals.

Coverage Methodology

USBizIndex uses a geographic grid approach to data collection. Each state is divided into a hexagonal grid of search points. Each point is queried independently, returning nearby businesses matching the target vertical. Results are deduplicated by business name and address before delivery.

This approach captures businesses that appear in Google's index regardless of whether they rank prominently in broad searches — including owner-operators, micro-businesses, and contractors who don't run paid advertising. This is why USBizIndex counts frequently exceed official Census employer firm figures, which exclude non-employer businesses and sole proprietors.

Data Freshness

Data is pulled fresh at the time of each state/vertical collection run. Each record includes a pull date. Business data is not static — phone numbers, addresses, and operational status change. We recommend verifying high-value contacts independently before outreach.

Refresh cycles are planned on a rolling basis. The most recently refreshed datasets are indicated on product pages where available.
